Being a Good Digital Citizen

In the book, Untangling the Internet by Steve Dembo, the author talks about the internet curation sites like delicious. These sites made a way for people to personalize information and at the same time make the information public so other users could use the information too. If someone was doing extensive research on a particular subject area, they could bookmark the website so it could be viewed later and sort the information based on personalized tags about the information for ease of access for themselves and others. These curation tools allow the user to collaborate ideas over the net with other groups of people. There are three types of curation tools and are specific to each job the user anticipates on doing .

The curation tool called Symbaloo is great tool for simple easy use with less complication involved. It is ease of access with dashboard icons. The webmix makes it possible to customize information by providing a URL. The interface is simple and great for people not too acquainted with technology. The Symbaloo allows people to create different webmixes for various interest. Webmixes allow students to study a specific subject that they are currently learning. The bookmarklet addon allows to do more complex alterations to their webmixes and contribute to others’ webmixes. These bookmarking sites leave it up to the individual which parts of information were deemed important and tagging them as a way of sorting through content. The more people that tag, the more the information will be properly categorized.

The diigo site is a more advanced curation tool than Symbaloo. The diigo site allows users to have access to their bookmarks no matter the device they're using to access the site. They can also add commentary. It also gives notification via email if someone updates the information. It has the ability to cache sites. When students do group calibrations it is possible to see who did what information.
The EduClipper allows students and teacher to clip any site and  will add auto citations. This site is more geared toward k-12 students. The site also allows choosing which member to share content with others. EduClippers also allows users to export information onto other places. The user should always give credit to the person who has ownership of an idea like a good digital citizen. The teachers have the ability to determine if a network is to be open or closed to the public. Also, teachers can control which links are age appropriate for their students. So the teacher regulates most of the options the student has available. EduClips can be embedded onto social media to be shared or placed onto a digital portfolio

The article, A Simple Acronym For Encouraging Digital Citizenship by Tech Thought Staff , talks about being a good digital citizen which resounds the message talked about by Dembo. The fact that if you use somebody else’s information you should always that person credit. In the article,  EVEN OUR YOUNGEST STUDENTS NEED DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP SKILLS By Kathy, she talks about how students are born into the world with technology. The parents who did not grow  up with technology actively search for guidelines for how young children should  use the internet. Kathy explains by being  a good digital citizen, it is a way to teach kids how to use the internet.  She gives an example of a young student who was angry at a classmate that wanted to post a message about the classmate.  She stopped him from doing this and she asked the student later about how they now felt about their peer. They had gotten over the incident quickly.   She taught them not to post angry stuff about people you will regret later and cannot take back because the world has already seen the post. That doing things like this does not promote kindness in the cyber world so they are not being a good digital citizen.  A good digital citizen is always conscious of the links they're clicking on, careful not to reveal their identities over the net, use the internet for learning , and always kind to others.

Kathy talks about how being a good digital citizen is also about keeping identity hidden. In the article,This Tool Lets You Stalk Twitter Users to Teach Them a Lesson About Privacy by Derrick Harris, he talks about how criminals use social media technology to locate when users are out of the house and the frequent times they leave the house. When people are not present they burglarize the house. The users of social media sites should be more mindful of stuff like geo-tags in order to be a good digital citizen.
